Our chapter in Sentient Books: AI’s Impact on Creation is out with Quod Manet Press!

“Devising with the Machine: Artificial Intelligence and Human Creativity in Performance”

This chapter, cowritten with Julia Listengarten and Alyssa Barrack, examines the intersections of theatre and artificial intelligence through the creation of AI Cabaret: Late Night with Artificial Intelligence, an experimental performance presented at the University of Central Florida’s Celebrates the Arts festival in Spring 2025. Rooted in the conviction that the performing arts are uniquely positioned to interrogate what it means to be human in an era of accelerating AI, the project explored both the embodied immediacy of live theatre and the generative possibilities of machine collaboration. Reflecting on creative challenges and discoveries, we argue that the friction between human and machine enriched the artistic process, expanded pedagogical opportunities, and offered audiences a provocative glimpse into the evolving relationship between technology and performance.

“We were trying to figure out how to be the best educators we could — how to help students navigate this ever-changing technological landscape while holding true to our standards.”

“We’re funnier than AI,” Edmonson said after a failed experiment with jokes created by artificial intelligence. “The only thing funny about that is it was so bad. There are limitations we didn’t anticipate.”

Dr. Chloë nominated in the category of Best Director of a Comedy for her work on Rhinoceros at Theatre UCF

“Eugene Ionesco's Rhinoceros provokes both laughs and horror in a stylish production from Theatre UCF”

Matt Palm, ORLANDO SENTINEL (November 15, 2024)

“I felt a sick little knot in the pit of my stomach at the end of Theatre UCF‘s production of “Rhinoceros,” and that’s a compliment for director Chloë Rae Edmonson and her team.”

“Adding to the unease is Edmonson’s clever and oh-so-effective use of motion. A strange series of dance-like twitches at the play’s start binds the characters together, some sleight of hand in the opening scene augments the absurdist humor and the relentless marching of the rhinos — well, we all know what mindless marching means in entertainment. They are not the good guys.”

Chloe Edmonson … has studied burlesque’s evolution and said there’s nothing more organic than Les Vixens running the queer burlesque scene.

“Burlesque is not only a sexy striptease, but it's also about this woman's command of her own body, or it's about capitalism, or it's about climate,” Edmonson said. “There's just so many different ways to embed whatever personal message the performer has into the art form.
